- Assistant VP Auxiliary Services
Description
The AVP of Auxiliary Services provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and financial stewardship for key campus services including Housing, Dining, Bookstore, Emory Card, and Mail and Print services. This role ensures that these services support the university’s mission, enhance the student experience, and operate efficiently and sustainably. The AVP will lead a team of professionals and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver high-quality, customer-focused services.
The AVP will direct the general and financial management, marketing, promotional activities, interdepartmental relations and short- and long-range planning for auxiliary enterprises. The AVP will have oversight for RFP and contract processes for outsourced services.
The AVP will have a service approach and will work collaboratively with students, faculty and administrators to understand and support the needs of customers for sustainable, responsive and effective programs in auxiliary services. The AVP will provide innovative recommendations to increase revenue in auxiliaries while ensuring a sustainable expense model.
The AVP will be responsible for the financial management of all auxiliary enterprises. The AVP will submit annual budgets and provide monthly financial updates to the Senior Associate VP for Business Operations. The AVP will ensure that all transactions and activities are managed within University Audit, Compliance and GAAP policies and procedures.
The AVP will strive to create a model organization and represent the University at local, regional and national events.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Planning
Develop and implement long-term strategic plans for auxiliary services aligned with institutional goals.
Lead initiatives to improve service delivery, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Monitor industry trends and integrate best practices to maintain competitive and innovative services.
Operational Oversight
Oversee daily operations of Housing, Dining, Bookstore, Emory Card, and Mail & Print services.
Ensure compliance with university policies, local/state/federal regulations, and contractual obligations.
Manage vendor relationships and contracts, including performance evaluation and renewal processes.
Financial Management
Develop and manage budgets for all auxiliary units, ensuring fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
Analyze financial performance and implement strategies to optimize revenue and control costs.
Lead and manage the annual process to set housing and dining rates to be approved by the board.
Prepare reports and presentations for senior leadership on financial and operational performance.
Conduct regular audits and financial reviews to ensure accuracy, transparency, and compliance with university and regulatory standards.
Policy Management
Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures governing auxiliary services.
Ensure policies are current, compliant, and effectively communicated to stakeholders.
Ensure alignment and compliance with university-wide policies and procedures.
Collaborate with legal, compliance, audit, and risk management teams to address policy-related issues, conduct reviews, and implement corrective actions where appropriate.
Communicate policy updates effectively to internal teams and stakeholders, ensuring consistent application across all auxiliary units.
Vendor Management & Oversight
Lead the selection, negotiation, and management of contracts with third-party vendors supporting Housing, Dining, Bookstore, Emory Card, and Mail & Print services.
Establish performance metrics and conduct regular evaluations to ensure vendors meet service standards, compliance requirements, and financial expectations.
Foster collaborative relationships with vendors to drive innovation, resolve issues, and continuously improve service delivery.
Ensure vendor activities align with university policies, risk management protocols, and strategic goals.
Crisis & Risk Management
Develop contingency plans and lead response efforts for operational disruptions.
Ensure business continuity and safety across all auxiliary functions.
Team Leadership & Development
Supervise and mentor department managers and staff, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.
Promote professional development and continuous improvement across all auxiliary units.
Customer Experience & Engagement
Ensure services are responsive to the needs of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Lead efforts to gather feedback and continuously improve service quality.
Collaborate with campus partners to support student success and community engagement.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Business Administration, Higher Education Administration, or related field preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in auxiliary services or related fields.
Experience managing in the Auxiliary Services space on a college campus with oversight of services such as housing, dining, bookstore and ID card services.
Proven experience managing complex operations, budgets, and vendor relationships.
Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated commitment to customer service, innovation, and continuous improvement.
