This position offers the flexibility of remote or hybrid work and can be based at either of our campuses in Urbana, Springfield, or Chicago
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide expertise and assistance to the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer in building and implementing a System level compliance office. This position is designed to coordinate and support the existing decentralized University compliance units with their many diverse experiences, priorities, and perspectives to become a robust institutional compliance network. The Associate Director of Compliance will coordinate with the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer to develop an effective institutional compliance program, which coordinates and provides resources, support, advice and training for compliance partners across the University of Illinois System.
Act in an advisory capacity to monitor internal and external compliance environments; identify and communicate potential risks and vulnerabilities to System decision makers; and set up processes to coordinate and communicate regarding the entire System's compliance with federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations, as well as institutional policies.
Build collaborative relationships and establish regular communications processes with compliance partners (e.g., University compliance officers, health care system compliance officers, athletics compliance officers, research designees) across the System.
Maintain a communications strategy involving University partners that promotes the understanding of new and existing compliance issues, policies and procedures.
Coordinate System-wide training needs with compliance partners to help ensure the University community understands the compliance responsibilities relevant to their work.
Assist key policy-owners with updating, improving, and developing comprehensive compliance policies, procedures, guidelines, and training programs.
Promote the use of the Ethics Line by faculty and staff to report perceived inappropriate activities and lack of compliance regarding federal law, state law, and University policies.
Coordinate or refer compliance concerns with appropriate System and University administrators for investigation and resolution.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field.
Preferred:
Master's degree in related field or Juris Doctorate.
Certifications
Preferred:
Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional or similar certification.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
Five years of professional experience in law or in a compliance related field, or as a compliance officer.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
Proven ability to work well with diverse populations
Advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite as well as proficiency with an Internet browser.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with University, campus, and departmental officials and staff to communicate technical and complex concepts clearly and persuasively.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent problem-solving skills to address difficult, complex issues.
Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain work relationships.
Ability to work independently and to exercise good judgment and discretion in the performance of all work assignments.
Professional leadership experience within an academic institution, medical or research center, large company, or government agency
