Aztec Shops, Ltd, a nonprofit corporation that functions primarily as an auxiliary of San Diego State University, located in San Diego, CA, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its next director of dining and hospitality services. This is an on-site, in-person leadership role.
Aztec Shops, Ltd., founded in 1931, manages a diverse portfolio of services, including the operation of the SDSU bookstore, SDSU dining, SDSU conference services, SDSU licensing, and commercial and residential real estate properties surrounding the campus. Since its founding in 1897, San Diego State University has grown to become a leading public research university, a federally-designated Hispanic-serving institution, and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution. Each year, SDSU provides more than 36,000 students with the opportunity to participate in an academic curriculum distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an international emphasis that prepares them for a global future.
RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Aztec Shops, the Director of Dining and Hospitality Services manages and directs the comprehensive, self-operated campus dining operations on the San Diego State University (SDSU) campus. Campus dining operations include a wide array of dining halls, convenience stores, quick-serve restaurants, catering, a farmer's market, a faculty/staff club, central food production, and warehouse facilities. Live venue operations include concessions and premium food and beverage for Snapdragon Stadium, Viejas Arena, CalCoast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, Aztrack, and Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Director leads all aspects of departmental strategic planning, implements solid financial management practices (including complex budgeting and forecasting), and consistently builds and maintains solid relationships with co-workers, staff, campus partners, and other internal and external stakeholders. The Director supervises a dynamic team of over 1,000 full-time, part-time, student, and seasonal employees, including six direct reports, and manages revenues of more than $50 million.
The base salary range for this role is $125,966.91-$200,470.65. The final compensation will be commensurate with such factors as relevant experience, skillset, internal equity, and market factors.
QUALIFICATIONS Requirements include a bachelor's degree in business administration (master's degree preferred) and at least ten years of large-scale food service management experience (or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience). Other minimum requirements include extensive knowledge of high-volume food production, with large venue experience highly desired; demonstrated experience with baking and catering, kitchen design, large food service equipment, nutrition, assessment of food quality, and dining trends; and possession of or ability to obtain a Serv-Safe Managers Certification.
