Brief Summary of Work for this Position: UNCW's Office of the Arts inspires the UNCW campus and the Wilmington community, curating diverse and distinctive cultural programming to shine a spotlight on the intellectual life of the campus. Arts programming at UNCW is international in scope with a focus on artists from North Carolina and the coastal south. Performances and residencies encourage connection among people and across disciplines, including the five academic arts departments and all four colleges of the university. We cultivate the curiosity of UNCW's students, faculty, staff, and community through our shared commitment to creative inquiry, critical thinking, and thoughtful expression. UNCW's Office of the Arts provides coordination for cultural arts activities campus-wide including UNCW Presents. The office provides management and oversight to the operations of UNCW's performance venues (Kenan Auditorium and Cultural Arts Building.) We serve as liaison with local, regional, state and national entities, organizations and artists in establishing effective partnerships, highlighting the cultural profile of the institution. This position provides exemplary customer service as well as front-of-house leadership and coordination for events at UNCW's Kenan Auditorium, Beckwith Recital Hall, and Mainstage Theatre. Duties include coordinating volunteers, overseeing ushers and ticket takers, facilitating patron flow and comfort in theater lobbies, coordinating needs of patrons with disabilities, and program distribution for events and performances. This position will interact with a broad range of on and off campus clients and requires strong communication and customer service skills. This is a part-time, temporary position, with varying hours depending on number and duration of events. Responsibilities:
Provide exemplary customer service for all UNCW Arts patrons attending events
Assist in the recruitment and training of volunteer ushers
Assist in the collaborative volunteer program with colleagues at Thalian Hall and Wilson Center and assist in managing points system for UNCW Arts volunteers
Set up and supervise any event specific equipment and activities in the lobby
Lead usher meetings before each event and designate usher responsibilities
Ensure patron safety & comfort and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance
Coordinate front of house activities (house opening, curtain holds, late seating, photography policy, intermissions) with Stage Manager and Technical Director
Respond effectively during emergencies following UNCW and Kenan Auditorium protocol
Compile information about event for House Manager's report and distribute following each event
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Minimum of two years' experience in house management or another customer service oriented field The ability to carry up to 25 pounds, climb stairs and the ability to stand for several hours at a time are required Candidates must be organized, diplomatic, self-directed, and able to manage several responsibilities at once The position requires willingness and ability to work with a flexible schedule, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays and long hours The Manager should have excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrate a proven ability to interact with diverse patrons and volunteers Computer literacy in a Microsoft office environment, ability to use web-based volunteer sign-up software, and improvisational problem-solving skills are essential
