Financial Analyst
The Financial Analyst position is responsible for supporting the financial operations unit of the University’s central finance office. Reporting to the Director of Financial Reporting and Accounting, the Financial Analyst will have primary responsibilities will be unclaimed property and to support both the Senior Financial Analyst, Financial Reporting and Accounting, and the Accounts Receivable Manager. The Financial Analyst’s efforts will be dedicated approximately 25% to the unclaimed property process, 25% to assisting with investment accounting and endowment distribution, 25% to assisting with accounts receivable billing and collections, and 25% for other duties as directed by Director of Financial Reporting and Accounting. Flexible remote, hybrid and in-person work options are available.
The Financial Analyst position requires experience in accounting and an understanding of standard accounting principles, experience reconciling; balancing and maintaining accounting records; working in a customer-oriented environment with a focus on helping customers achieve their operational objectives. The position will be required to develop proficiency with existing University policies and procedures relating to endowments and accounts receivable.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Unclaimed Property - 25%
The position will have primary responsibility for:
- Identifying uncashed checks.
- Making good faith attempts to return unclaimed property to owners as required by the Virginia Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act.
- Preparing the annual unclaimed property report for submission to the Virginia Treasury Department.
- Reconcile uncashed check list from bank rec to uncashed check list from accounting system.
- Access SIS to obtain information on students to facilitate check replacement process.
- Develop spreadsheet for process and update sheet as actions are implemented.
- Replace checks or return funds to Virginia Department of Treasury as needed.
- Respond to payees inquires.
Investment Management - 25%
The position will assist the Assistant Director for Investment Services with:
- Creating of new gift worktags.
- Investment of monthly gifts and distribution of endowment income.
- Processing monthly activity in the Fundriver system.
- Upload gift documentation into ImageNow.
- Reconciliation of Investment and Trust accounts.
- Calculation of endowment distribution rate.
- Assist with preparation of investment surveys.
Accounts Receivables - 25%
The position will assist the Senior Accounts Receivable Accountant with:
- Responding to customer or billing department inquiries.
- Researching miscellaneous ACH/wire transfers and checks by identifying appropriate customer accounts for posting of receipts.
- Preparing and posting OAR account write-offs.
- Maintaining the returned check account and creating appropriate entries.
- Administering the State Tax Set-Off Program (SODC) for A/R accounts.
- Reconciling departmental accounts for suspense and accounts receivable.
- Customer collection efforts according to UVA policy.
Financial Reporting - 25%
This position will assist the Director of Financial Reporting and Accounting with:
- Post audit review of departmental transactions.
- Analytical reviews of University balances and activity.
- Assist with GASB entries for Quarterly and Year-end reporting.
- Assist with preparation of other external reports (IPEDS, NACUBO, etc.).
- Assist with implementation of new GASB Standards.
- Assist with Year-end financial statement audit.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to work with a complex, on-line financial or accounting system.
- Ability to perform detailed work with numerical data and to make arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately; ability to prepare financial reports and handle one or more aspects of fiscal operations.
- Knowledge of spreadsheet software and the ability to use computers to process information.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of professional individuals.
- Ability to exercise appropriate judgment in making decisions related to accounting entries and in resolving customer inquiries.
- Prior customer service experience preferred.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:
- Required Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, degree in Business or Accounting preferred.
- Preferred Experience: 2+ years of relevant experience.
- Required Computer Applications: Microsoft Excel.
- Preferred Computer Applications: Workday (HCM or other) and Qlik Sense.
