Executive Director for Faculty Student Association at Stony Brook University – Full Time
Position Summary
The Executive Director is the Chief Operating Officer of the Corporation (FSA) reporting to the President of the Board of Directors. The position is responsible for establishing a strategic vision, in conjunction with the Board, and provides leadership for the corporation with emphasis on the continued development, refinement and implementation of services delivered. The incumbent will ensure FSA services contribute to the quality of campus life in a flexible, efficient and responsive manner to support the mission of the Stony Brook campus in response to evolving stakeholder needs and institutional priorities, while ensuring FSA and affiliates provide superior value, excellence and service.
The incumbent is responsible for understanding and advocating the issues of the diverse Campus constituencies as they relate to FSA's contractual services and for being the senior representative of FSA. In consultation with the Board, the incumbent leads the planning processes for long/short term strategic goals and priorities using evidence-based decision-making. The incumbent is an ex-officio member of the FSA Board of Directors.
Position Responsibilities
- Develops, articulates and implements the vision of the corporation and its activities, with the Board of Directors and key Campus administrators. Provides daily leadership to central staff of the corporation.
- In consultation with the Board, develops annual strategic objectives to align with vision-mission and values.
- Leads FSA staff in all business activities and provides strategic vision and leadership to departments within FSA for the continued development and refinement of services’ delivery in response to evolving stakeholder needs and institutional priorities.
- Oversees policy development and implementation consistent with expectations of the University
- Oversees development and implementation of the annual operating and capital budget.
- Leads a continuous planning and developing leadership strategies for professional staff.
- Oversees negotiation of collective bargaining contracts.
- Leads Facility, Communication and IT strategies in conjunction with the relevant University departments.
- Works independently in assuring alignment with the FSA vision, mission and goals.
- Clearly defines the role/expectations of third party contractors to deliver the best experience based on SBU vision and goals (Follett, Culinart, etc.).
- Engages and builds effective teams focused on delivering results with financial responsibilities.
- Develops succession plans aimed towards developing skills set for staff/team.
- Finds creative solutions that keep the cost to students in check and at the same time delivers exceptional programs to the students/campus.
- Seeks new and effective ways to deliver innovative programs for the students/community.
- Focuses on diversity and building a culture of respect, dignity, inclusion and promotes diversity in the ranks.
- Builds a culture of integrity, transparency, honesty to enhance the SBU vision/mission.
- Proactively finds finding ways to improve the student’s experience on campus.
- Develops and delivers a culture of student success.
- Acts as a strong partner, voice and ally for student and SBU community.
- Creates and maintains culture that accepts and cherishes ALL backgrounds, culture and respects/celebrates differences among us.
- Commits to keeping the reserve funding required by SUNY and continue to find investments that will enhance the SBU experience.
- Holds team accountable for actions and results.
- Finds creative ways to be efficient in the operations to keep the cost down of operations without effecting the goal of providing exceptional service.
- Develops 3-5 year plan for facilities upgrade, program and financial goals, etc.
- Other duties as assigned by Board of Directors.
Required Education, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field required.
- Auxiliary service success with an emphasis on broad scale food service business acumen and in-depth knowledge of food operations to guide Campus Dining and FSA staff to achieve goals.
- Knowledge / experience of contemporary trends in retail services on campus is also required.
- Minimum of seven years’ successful experience as a dining services director managing a $15M or greater complex Campus Dining Services operation to include at least five years’ experience overseeing Auxiliary Enterprise commercial operations, preferably with contracted operations.
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead a team and mentor staff to meet expectations and grow in the organization.
- Demonstrated exemplary performance at managing multiple priorities and success at achieving goals. Experience with information technology that applies to management of the campus businesses and in facility renovation projects and monitoring campus facility maintenance activities.
- Excellent interpersonal (i.e. verbal and written), and financial skills for communication with institutional partners, contract providers and campus governance.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
- Master's Degree preferred.
- Experience successfully leading marketing, communications, public relations activities and social media. Successfully leading contract compliance activities.
- Supervising labor relations, including benefits administration and collective bargaining units.
- Proven experience in transformational leadership
Position Reports to: The Executive Director reports directly to the President of the Board of Directors.
Reporting to this Position: The CFO and six other members of the leadership team report directly to this position.
