Director for Enterprise Risk Management
About the Opportunity
The Director for Enterprise Risk Management is responsible for supporting University leadership in establishing and overseeing University-wide processes to address enterprise risk management, including risks at the system level. The Director for Enterprise Risk Management provides advice and counsel to senior University leaders on matters under their areas of responsibility and works to facilitate system-wide initiatives to enhance enterprise risk management. The Director also supports the lead committee staff to the Board of Governors Committee on Audit, Risk Management, and Compliance. The Director of Enterprise Risk Management with the UNC System Office Safety & Enterprise Risk Management unit will manage the risk management program, assessing and identifying risks that could impede the reputation, safety, security, or success of the UNC System and each constituent institution.
This position requires an on-site work presence. There may be flexibility for occasional remote telework based on supervisor’s discretion and workloads. The work site location is expected to change from Chapel Hill, NC to Raleigh, NC as of December 2022. Travel to constituent institutions, as needed, throughout the state is a requirement of the position.
About the UNC System Office
The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.
About the Team
The UNC System Office Safety & Enterprise Risk Management unit is a source of leadership, subject matter expertise, and coordination in the areas of institutional law enforcement, security, emergency management, environmental health and safety, Clery Act compliance, Title IX, operational readiness and response, and enterprise risk management. The unit’s functions include leading law enforcement, emergency preparedness and response, and related activities at the UNC System level, and serving as a point of liaison and coordination in partnership with the chiefs of police and emergency management leads at the University of North Carolina’s constituent institutions and affiliates. The unit also leads and manages all enterprise risk management functions required under UNC Policy 1300.7. This unit keeps the president and other University senior leaders informed of major critical incidents at the System Office, constituent institutions, and affiliated entities, leverages emergency response capabilities across the UNC System, serves as the principal liaison on behalf of the UNC System with local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety partners; and leads risk management efforts.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Bachelor's degree required with at least four years of experience in fields related to risk management, controls, corporate governance, and/or project management.

The successful candidate will have: -Ability to identify and mitigate risk while demonstrating good people and leadership skills. -Ability to build relationships with other departments, superiors, and university institutions. -Remaining updated on regulation changes (Title IX, Clery, Protection of Minors, HIPAA, Federal Grant Compliance, etc.) and being adaptable to changing threats in the work environment -The ability to quantify potential risks by rank and the likelihood and severity of each. -Demonstrative knowledge of mitigation risk options (Acceptance, Avoidance, Limitation, and Transference) -Excellent presentation, written, and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, and strong organizational and computer skills. -Excellent project management skills. Must possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment managing multiple priorities while meeting deadlines. -Analytical skills to collect data and make important decisions and recommendations to System Office leadership using that data.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
Enterprise Risk Management certifications provided by a third-party validation of an individual's knowledge of understanding and managing risk. Certifications can be from Professional Risk Managers (PRM), Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA), Certified Risk Managers (CRM), or other identified organizations that better prepare a subject matter expert to be aware of the various enterprise risks that exist. -Familiarity with higher education regulatory requirements. -Familiarity with System-level governance.
