Overview
The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard invites nominations and applications for the position of Senior Director, Financial Strategy, Planning and Analysis (FSP&A). Reporting to the CFO, the Senior Director FSP&A will frame the Institute’s conversations around key aspects of financial planning and analysis. The Senior Director, FSP&A will: execute planning, budgeting and forecasting in ways that support and inform Broad’s annual financial planning cycle; consider longer-term aspects of financial strategy and planning, and the key analytics, questions and metrics that will inform decisions with financial implications; establish and enhance strong partnerships with Broad’s entrepreneurial scientists, scientific operating units (science programs and technology platforms, centers/initiatives, etc.), and administrative leaders and; raise pertinent strategic questions that will help shape the Institute’s future and, in doing so, make a transformative impact on scientific discovery.

Scope of Role
You will be a critical member of the finance leadership team, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, overseeing a staff of approximately 15 FTEs.
- Provide strategic financial analysis and budgeting activities for the Institute (an annual operating budget of >$650M plus related capital spending plans).
- Run the annual budget development process and related budget monitoring activities; develop budget assumptions and forecasts, prepare financially robust budget recommendations, and serve as a resource on strategic financial planning and budget-related activities.
- Work closely with senior leadership, drive the development and distribution of relevant financial reporting and analysis in support of strategic and operational initiatives and business monitoring.
- Lead the design and preparation of the Institute’s multi-year financial forecast, including sophisticated scenario analytics.
- Oversee the development of tools as an integral activity for budget preparation, planning and analysis for the organization.
- Collaborate with scientific and administrative leaders to brainstorm about new opportunities and innovations, and analyze their financial feasibility and risk.
- Prepare financial reports for senior management, the Board of Directors and the Board’s Finance Committee to examine and evaluate the Institute’s financial health and trends.
- Support the preparation and negotiation of the Institute’s F&A cost proposal and fringe benefit rate (working with Broad’s Director of Cost Analysis).
- Oversee the development and/or review of pricing models for the Institute’s Specialized Service Facilities (SSFs), and otherwise provide financial and business partnership to Broad’s technology platforms and platform-like groups.
- As part of the CFO’s leadership team, ensure compliance with Institute policy and federal grant and contract regulations; and help to ensure the Institute is adequately prepared for external and internal audits, rating agency engagements, etc.
- Recommend changes in policy, practices and procedures as they relate to the budget process, overhead recovery, SSF pricing models, or other financial operations to ensure efficient operation with adequate controls.
- Maintain and enhance the FSP&A team’s collaborative environment, enable the team to achieve and exceed its goals, and drive the development of bench strength to support succession planning and internal mobility/advancement.
- Create and deliver training and education for relevant Institute constituencies.
Requirements
- BS/BA is required. Advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of ten years of progressive experience including five years in a management role, overseeing budgeting and financial planning, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
- Demonstrated role in decision analysis and experience in building and using models for financial planning, tracking and forecasting.
- Demonstrated executive-level standard of quality reporting and analysis, both written and verbal.
