The Director of Budget & Planning works closely with the Chief Financial Officer to provide oversight on all aspects of Clarkson University’s financial planning and analysis. This position works closely with the Controller to ensure alignment of budget and financial planning with financial reporting and provides regular updates to the Financial Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees. The position also works closely with the Provost and peers across campus on integrated planning efforts including the alignment of strategic planning, academic planning, financial planning, space planning, capital planning, and other operational planning. The position is responsible for leadership of financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, business and financial analysis, and reporting budgetary performance. The position leads the University-wide integrated all-funds financial forecasting and planning efforts for approximately $140 million in revenue and activities across Clarkson University, working directly with senior leadership and the Board of Trustees. The Director of Budget & Planning must develop strong and effective working relationships with staff as well as external constituents.
Position Responsibilities:
- Lead university-wide financial planning and analysis, oversee the development and implementation of a university budget model, and supervise budget office staff
- Evaluate and implement best practices in forecasting and performance monitoring including all fund types and activities
- Integrate financial planning with strategic planning, academic planning, space planning, capital planning, and other operational planning
- Provide effective training and ongoing performance feedback and formal annual performance evaluations. Motivate staff to achieve peak performance; initiate corrective and/or disciplinary action as necessary
- On behalf of the Chief Financial Officer, lead or oversee projects and initiatives that advance the University mission related to financial and business services
- Develop and cultivate solid working relationships throughout the University community, with key academic and administrative leaders at all campuses and colleges and external stakeholders
- Foster a culture of customer service and shared fiscal responsibility and accountability
- Serve as an appointing authority for the area when the Chief Financial Officer is unavailable. Represent the University on internal and/or external committees, boards or workgroup
- Perform other related duties as assigned

Education:
Minimal Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree, preferably in finance, business administration, management, or accounting
- Mid-level management experience in an institution of higher education
- Demonstrated expertise in forecasting
- Experience in institutional budgeting, forecasting and planning
- Experience analyzing business proposals
Experience:
Minimal Experience:
- Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience including at least three years of high-level experience in planning, budgeting, or a closely related field
Preferred Experience:
- Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience including at least five years of high-level experience in higher education planning, budgeting, or a closely related field.
