The University of Kentucky is seeking an experienced tax expert to serve as our Assistant Controller. This leadership role is vital to maintain and expand the University’s multi-faceted mission of teaching, research, health care, and service. The University Assistant Controller will collaborate across campus to ensure the University remains compliant with a variety of federal, state, local and international tax reporting requirements. This position serves as a liaison between various tax authorities, advisors and external auditors.
Primary Responsibilities
- Advise the Treasurer, Controller and other senior leadership on tax reporting and compliance related issues.
- Assist departments by researching appropriate tax regulations and developing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with international, federal, state and local tax regulations
- Monitor developments and changes, related to international, federal, state and local tax regulations
- Act as a liaison between various tax authorities, external auditors, and the University
- Identify activities that potentially generate unrelated business taxable income by partnering with financial administrators throughout the University and preforming financial analysis
- Determine proper tax treatment of identified activities
- Document and continuously reevaluate the University’s tax position, policy and procedures and initiates process changes and recommends policy changes in tax related areas
- Work, in collaboration with all departments and colleges, to reduce the University’s tax burden and ensure compliance with all tax laws
- Participate in institutional projects with international tax implications
- Direct and supervise preparation, review and submission of monthly, quartile and annual federal, state and local payroll tax documents and tax deposits
- Direct and supervise compliance with tax treaties and non-resident alien tax reporting, student tax reporting, and vendor tax reporting
- Serve as the tax expert for all individual taxation and Unrelated Business Income taxation issues at the University
Expertise
Successful candidates must demonstrate knowledge of and experience tax compliance laws and regulations. The ideal candidate will possess deep understanding of tax trends, issues, and risks. In addition, the candidate must have proven project management experience, leadership skills and executive presence with the ability to gain respect and confidence with professional peers. It is essential that this individual possess high ethical standards, attention to detail, effective communication, the ability to build teams and relationships, results orientation and commitment to staff development.
Required education and experience
- A Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance
- Minimum of 6 years of tax compliance and leadership experience.
- A current CPA license is highly preferred
