The Assistant Vice President for Finance supports learning by working directly with the Vice President for Finance in promoting financial sustainability at Aurora University. Primary responsibilities include annual budget development and oversight, financial analysis and modeling, cash management and forecasting, contract and risk management, and university analytics and compliance. This position will prepare information and analysis used to guide decision making of senior university leadership and the Board of Trustees and to maintain university compliance with various external constituencies.
This position will have accountability for three staff. Reporting to this position is the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis, the Director of University Analytics, and an Analyst. This position requires innovative thinking and critical analysis in an environment of overlapping priorities for data driven decisions. We seek a strategic thinker with attention to detail to enhance the capacity of the university's financial oversight and planning.
Ensure the completeness and accuracy of university financial information, cash and investment oversight, contract and insurance records, and analytics and/or compliance functions while maintaining a climate of confidentiality.
Prepare accurate and timely university budgets, forecasting and analysis, to include development of preliminary and revised budgets which include revenue forecasting, position control, departmental operating expenses, debt service, and capital expenditures as well as the related budget to actual analysis.
Oversee banking and investment portfolio relationships.
Assume primary responsibility for cash management to ensure operating and capital cash balances are maintained at sufficient levels to support the university's objectives.
Assume primary responsibility for the university's insurance and risk management program to include annual renewal applications and coverage analysis, claim reporting and resolution, risk management and loss control.
Assume primary responsibility for contract management to review contract terms and conditions, negotiate favorable language to include appropriate risk mitigation term and conditions, and manage record-keeping for all contract-related correspondence and documentation.
Oversee university research projects and data analysis to enhance strategic planning, decision making and institutional performance. Data analysis includes recruitment and retention of students, financial aid policies, evaluation of new business initiatives, academic assessment, institutional data profile and key performance indicators.
Supervise, train, and mentor staff in a team environment; determine deadlines and plan staffing requirements for all fiscal activities; recruit and hire staff as needed; evaluate performance of staff; ensure and/or conduct staff training and cross training.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with university administrators, staff, and faculty to support student and employee success.
Assist the VP for Finance with other projects as assigned.
10+ years of finance or accounting experience with increasing responsibility in complex organization.
Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills required to communicate complex financial information in a meaningful way to all constituents of the university community.
Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and forecast results based on historical performance or other appropriate assumptions for future performance.
Ability to interpret, apply and communicate regulations, financial concepts, contract language, insurance policies, and other complex documents and/or agreements.
Highly organized, detail-oriented and accurate.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, understand and attend to details, meet established deadlines, and provide excellent customer service to the university community.
Strong analytical, organizational, time management and problem solving skills.
Expertise in spreadsheet and word processing software: Microsoft is preferred.
Ability to inspire and motivate others to perform at high levels.
