Northern Illinois University (NIU) invites applications for the anticipated position of Assistant Comptroller in the Controller Office. This position is a full-time, 12-month civil service position. The Assistant Comptroller is responsible for managing the activities of the University’s accounting functions including accounts payable, travel, general ledger, bank reconciliations, financial reporting, tax compliance, financial aid cash management, and asset management with an emphasis on service delivery that is responsive, collaborative, and transparent.
This Assistant Comptroller reports to the Controller. The individual in this position works under the general administrative direction of the Controller. He/she provides supervision and oversight to professional and support staff, with a commitment to talent development, mentor ship, diversity, and a sense of humor that fosters credibility, organizational sustainability, and a culture of respect, accountability, sense of team, and ethically inspired leadership. Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills in daily functions that fosters transparency, customer satisfaction, and effective partnerships with stakeholders.
Five years of progressively responsible professional experience in accounting, finance, auditing, or a closely related field, three of which were in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
Demonstrated experience with a public accounting firm, that included demonstrated auditing work experience.
Advanced Microsoft Excel and Access skills including design, set-up, and maintenance of an automated accounting system.
Demonstrated experience with and understanding of enterprise financial systems, preferable Oracle PeopleSoft.
Prior work experience in preparation of financial statements, preferably in higher education. governmental, hospital, or manufacturing environments.
Registered or licensed Certified Public Accountant.
Preferred Education and Experience
Advanced degree in Accountancy or related field with at least 30 credit hours of accounting course work.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and creating an inclusive work environment that fosters creativity and innovation.
State of Illinois higher education experience.
Demonstrated change management experience in streamlining operational activities with focus on customer service.
Prior supervisory experience with demonstrated history of leading and developing teams that lead to effective and efficient operational changes.
