The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s rich history began in 1887 as the Croatan Normal School, founded with the purpose of training American Indian public school teachers. In 1941, the name was changed to Pembroke State College for Indians, and until the early 1950s, it was the only state supported four year college for Indians in the United States. The name was later changed to Pembroke State University, and in 1996 officially became The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP), one of the 17 institutions that comprise the University of North Carolina system.
