Howard University seeks applications and nominations of highly qualified individuals for the position of Assistant Vice President, Finance.
Established in 1867, Howard University is a federally chartered, private, doctoral university, classified as a high research activity institution. Under the general direction of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, the Assistant Vice President Finance will be responsible for undertaking initiatives, projects, analyses, policy reviews, and investigations. Including leadership of and participation in cross-functional staff teams, management of consultant and other University business partners in order to ensure the efficient operation of the University and its affiliates and subsidiaries demonstrating sound decision-making on complex business issues. Additionally, the desired candidate will be executing accountable, consistent, prudent and transparent administration of University financial policies, practices and procedures through the successful development and execution of strategies to achieve these objectives.
The Assistant Vice President will be expected to help the University to achieve and maintain financial stability, advance the University's mission and academic priorities, and enable the University to conduct itself as a prudent steward for the resources entrusted to it by students and their families, donors, grantors, and other resource-providers for the benefit of the University's student body, faculty, staff, alumni and general community.
The Assistant Vice President will provide University-wide leadership and direction to University staff and internal and external constituencies with respect to matters of financial administration and overall University policy and in general will serve as the representative of the Chief Financial Officer.
The Assistant Vice President will help to develop methods and strategies to improve processes and business practices within the Finance Department and throughout the University. The duties of this position will include taking actions and making decisions that may have a material financial impact on the University. The Assistant Vice President assist the Chief Financial Officer and the other University Executive Team members in formulating policies that ensure that the financial operations of the University are being carried out in accordance with all University policies, sound financial principles, and all relevant governmental laws, regulations, and procedures.
The candidate will have a thorough understanding of GAAP and relevant FASB pronouncements, particularly with respect to nonprofit institutions and higher education. The financial leader will possess the interpersonal skills and leadership style required to promote positive change, motivate peers and subordinates, advance and encourage ethical conduct at all times and help infuse a sense of urgency and accountability across the organization.
The Assistant Vice President will have the demonstrated ability to serve as a leader who can identify and nurture talent, build and lead teams, develop individuals' talents and abilities, promote process improvement and work effectively across a complex and multi-layered organization. Additionally, the candidate will demonstrate integrity and strong character, possess higher energy, be willing and able to set and achieve high standards, able to measure and monitor results, able to take corrective action when necessary and possess the ability to make difficult decisions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills is paramount with internal constituencies at all levels of the organization as well as outside partners, colleagues, and collaborators.
