The Assistant Controller (Administrator) is responsible for the strategic direction, management, and oversight of the University Financial Officer organization in the Office of the Corporate Controller. The main responsibility of the Assistant Controller is to assure that the Financial Officers are trained and oriented in University controls, policies and procedures and also to provide direction and resolution regarding difficult and complex issues working closely with budget executives and others served by the Financial Officers and senior University leadership. The Assistant Controller is also a liaison to the Corporate Controller's Office, University Budget Office and other University offices as an advocate for the Financial Officers' area, as well as disseminating information to these organizations regarding operational and strategic opportunities. This position will interview, hire, train, manage, and evaluate assigned staff in consultation with unit leadership, as well as assisting Associate Directors with hiring and personnel issues for administrative and campus Financial Officers. The position will conduct regular meetings for the University Financial Offices and other financial professionals. The position will require serving as an interim Financial Officer when required to continue service to units during Financial Officer transitions. The position will be also be responsible for: providing support to the research administration community, specifically related to general post-award research administration; Overseeing policy development efforts across various functions, including financial, business services (purchasing), research, and administration in support of the Financial Officers and Corporate Controller; Coordinating complex issues related to risk, ethics and compliance which impact Financial Officers with Risk Management, Office of Sponsored Programs, Office for Research Protections, Office of General Counsel, Office of Ethics and Compliance and others. In addition to the above, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing development of business intelligence and other reports to support Financial Officers as well as central offices. Consult on changes required for current University systems to assure Financial Officer, budget executive and departmental reporting needs are met; providing direction to Financial Officers regarding audit issues and coordinate with Internal Audit on continuous monitoring and audit operations to improve University controls and operations. The successful candidate will also serve as needed on various committees and teams related to systems development and maintenance, both within the Corporate Controller's Office and across the University. As a key leadership position in the Office of the Corporate Controller, this position may assume other duties or assignments, related to strategic planning, special projects, or University-wide initiatives, as directed by the Corporate Controller. Requirements for this position are a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or other business related field. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation and Master's degree preferred as well as 10 years of accounting/financial experience, preferably with some background in management of higher education. Significant accounting and specialized knowledge necessary to understand and interpret impact on various accounting services and compliance with government, University and other regulations. Extensive leadership and analytical skills in accounting, finance, and business administration with demonstrated, adept management of information technology and change are essential for the role. Experience successfully leading a large diverse staff in dynamic, changing circumstances and proven management skills is needed. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) required. Due to the financial or fiduciary responsibilities of this position, successful completion of a credit history check will also be required in additional to standard background checks.
