Trinity, a comprehensive university in the nation’s capital, seeks a Controller who will be part of a dynamic team in the office of Business and Financial Affairs. This position will report directly to the CFO and will be part of the Senior Executive Staff. Trinity emphasizes excellence and innovation in teaching and learning across a full range of liberal arts and professional disciplines in undergraduate and graduate education. As such, we are looking for someone who enjoys a challenge, who is fully immersed in all accounting related functions, who understands and will support Trinity’s mission, is able to prioritize when faced with several important deadlines, supports, motivates and challenges a staff and most importantly works well in a team environment.
The Controller leads a Business Office staff and manages functions that include but are not limited to general accounting, fixed assets, debt management, cash receipts, student payments, student receivables, student loan funds, accounts payable, grants accounting, deferred gifts, audits and general ledger. In addition, the Controller provides leadership for financial system upgrades; implements/updates financial policies and procedures; serves as the internal auditor to ensure financial compliance; provides high-level financial analysis and reporting; assists the CFO in budget development; and performs other related duties and responsibilities.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business and seven years of progressive and relevant experience as an assistant controller or accounting manager in higher education are required.
The ideal candidate will have a relevant Master’s degree, with an emphasis in accounting and a CPA (both preferred, but not required).
The desired candidate will have demonstrated leadership, communication and customer service skills that inspire a diverse workforce and help to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Staying current on accounting and financial reporting standards for colleges and universities should be a part of the candidate’s arsenal.
Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Excel is required. Experience with Great Plains and Ellucian’s Power Campus database systems is highly desirable.
